Shout Out to Bev Johnson

Updated: Jul 18, 2022

I wanted to do a shout out to Bev Johnson in this blog post. I met Bev many moons ago when I was working on a project for The Dept of Training and Workforce Development, researching career development tools specifically designed for Aboriginal people (of which there were pretty much zero – I don’t actually think that’s changed much!?! Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though).

Anyway, Bev was living in Broome at the time, and we caught up to discuss said issues above. I knew from the onset that she was passionate about careers and that hasn’t wavered at all over the years. In fact, Bev is so passionate about careers that she is now the WA Division President for Career Development Association of Australia and the Director of Infocus Careers.

At a time when we are drowning in information, Bev gathers and synthesises career information at the right time, thinks critically about what we need and makes wise choices about what goes into her monthly In Focus Careers magazine for West Australian schools.

Bev keeps getting asked to produce a version for other states, but she says she can’t.

"I am passionate about helping our West Australian kids to win. That is the “why” of what I do."

Anyone working in career education appreciates the tsunami of information that floods in every week. As a former career teacher Bev knows how easily it is to be misled by the smoke and mirrors of big business advertising machines. She focuses on clarifying information and delivering career information that schools can trust.

"I call on the goodwill of people I know in education, training, industry and through university studies, to share information that helps school leavers to find where they want to belong."

Bev’s newsletters are easy to digest over a cup of early morning coffee, with links taking you to relevant pages and calendars outlining what various education and training institutions are doing.
